Description

This capacitive filling level sensor determines the filling level of reservoirs up to a height of 300 mm. The sensor is mounted on the side of the reservoir or can project directly into the material.

The analog output signal is created from the sum of the 10 sensor segments which are arranged in series and covered with the filling material. Additionally, 10 LEDs, arranged at the back of the unit, show the filling level. The advantage of this system of measuring is that mistakes due to contamination on the surface of the reservoir or sensor is avoided.

The capacitive sensor sees the filling material through walls of plastic or glass. Depending on the material, the thickness of the plastic or glass can be up to 20 mm.

Application

In grinding mills, the output of conveyor belts depends on an optimum supply of the material to be milled. During this process, a large volume of material has to pass through a small storage reservoir. This requires precise measurement of the level in a glass or plastic reservoir.

This bar shaped capacitive sensor monitors the level of the material through the reservoir wall and gives an analog output signal which controls the flow from the conveyor belt.

Assembly

The sensor is mounted by means of two screws at the foot of the reservoir so that the active surface is against the reservoir wall.

Adjustment

After the supply voltage is connected, the adjustment made at the factory can be checked by filling and emptying the reservoir.

Mounting
Considerations

Everything in the area of the active surface of the sensor changes the capacitance seen by the oscillator and thus alters the switching distance of the sensor. The extent of the change depends on the kind (conductivity, dielectric, ground), size and distance of the medium. Thus, humidity, dust, ambient temperature and coverage of the sensor can change the way it operates.
